Llantwit Major to welcome three families from Ukraine to former refugee centre
Eagleswell Road site to provide homes to those fleeing conflict
Llantwit Major is set to welcome three families from Ukraine to a former refugee centre, it has been announced. The Vale of Glamorgan Council said the families will be given homes at the Eagleswell Road site, which was previously used to house asylum seekers.
The council said it is working with a number of organisations to support the families, including the Red Cross and the Refugee Council. It said the families will be provided with accommodation, food, and other essential items.
Council leader: 'We are committed to providing a safe haven'
Council leader Neil Moore said: "We are committed to providing a safe haven for families who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict. We will do everything we can to make sure they feel welcome and supported in our community."
The Red Cross said it is "delighted" to be working with the council to support the families. A spokesperson said: "We are committed to helping people who have been forced to flee their homes, and we are pleased to be able to provide support to these families in Llantwit Major."
Families to be given support to integrate into community
The Refugee Council said it is "encouraged" by the council's commitment to supporting the families. A spokesperson said: "We know that families who have been forced to flee their homes need a safe place to stay, but they also need support to integrate into their new community."
The council said the families will be given access to a range of services, including English language classes, healthcare, and education. It said it will also work with local businesses to help the families find employment.
The news comes as the UK government has been criticized for its response to the refugee crisis in Ukraine. The government has been accused of not doing enough to help those fleeing the conflict, and of making it difficult for them to enter the UK.
However, the Vale of Glamorgan Council has said it is committed to doing its part to help those in need. The council said it is "proud" to be able to welcome the families to Llantwit Major, and that it will do everything it can to make sure they feel welcome and supported.
