"We would not have bet on that": Pierre Gasly's surprising success
The Frenchman was given up for dead in Formula 1 at the beginning of the year, but now he is one of the most successful drivers on the grid. How did this happen?
Gasly's difficult start in Formula 1
Pierre Gasly started his Formula 1 career at Toro Rosso in 2017. He was immediately up against it, as his teammate was the more experienced Brendon Hartley, who had finished eighth in the previous year's championship. The car was also not competitive, and Gasly struggled to score points at all.
In 2018, Gasly was promoted to Red Bull Racing, replacing the outgoing Daniel Ricciardo. However, his performance at Red Bull was disappointing, and he was demoted back to Toro Rosso after only 12 races.
Gasly's resurgence at AlphaTauri
Toro Rosso, which was renamed AlphaTauri in 2020, continued to struggle to find success in Formula 1. However, Gasly gradually began to improve his performance, and in 2020, he won the Italian Grand Prix. This was AlphaTauri's first win since 2008, and it was Gasly's first win in Formula 1.
Gasly's success in 2021
In 2021, Gasly continued to improve, and he finished 10th in the championship, with 110 points. This was his best finish in Formula 1, and it was also AlphaTauri's best finish since 2014. Gasly's success in 2021 was a great surprise, and it showed that he is a driver with a lot of potential.
What has Gasly's success been down to?
There are a few factors that have contributed to Gasly's success in 2021. Firstly, AlphaTauri has made a significant improvement with its car, which is now much more competitive than it was in the past. Secondly, Gasly has developed as a driver, and he is now much more experienced and mature. Finally, Gasly has a good relationship with his team, and this has helped him to get the best out of himself.
It is impossible to say exactly what the future holds for Gasly. However, his success in 2021 shows that he has the potential to be a top driver in Formula 1.
