Thick Smoke Over Hanover: 500 Portable Toilets Go Up in Flames in Wülfel
Firefighters Battle Blaze, Cause of Incident Remains Unclear
Thick smoke hung over the Hanover district of Wülfel on Monday evening, as firefighters battled a large fire involving around 500 portable toilets.
The fire broke out shortly after 6 pm in an industrial area on Am Mittelfelde, near the A2 motorway.
Firefighters were quickly on the scene and brought the blaze under control, but it took several hours to fully extinguish it.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but police have said there is no evidence to suggest it was started deliberately.
There were no injuries reported, and the damage is estimated to be in the region of hundreds of thousands of euros.
Residents in the area were advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to the thick smoke.
The fire caused long tailbacks on the A2 motorway, as traffic was diverted away from the scene.
Portable toilets are a common sight at construction sites, festivals, and other outdoor events.
They are usually made of plastic, making them highly flammable.
In 2019, a fire involving around 100 portable toilets caused extensive damage to a recycling plant in the United Kingdom.
The cause of that fire was also never determined.
