The Lieutenant Governor is the second highest elected official in Texas.
They preside over the Texas Senate and serve as Acting Governor when the Governor is out of state or temporarily unable to fulfill their duties.
Length of Term
Elected Every Four Years
The Lieutenant Governor is elected every four years on the same ballot as the Governor.
There is no limit to the number of terms a Lieutenant Governor can serve.
Current Term
The current Lieutenant Governor of Texas is Dan Patrick, who was elected in 2015 and sworn into office in 2019.
Powers and Responsibilities
In addition to presiding over the Texas Senate, the Lieutenant Governor has a number of other powers and responsibilities, including:
