James William Ercolani was born on June 8, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He began his career as a singer, releasing several hit songs in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

After "T.J. Hooker" ended in 1986, Darren continued to act in films and television shows.
