I'm an FGM survivor – barbaric abuse on a family holiday aged 7 nearly killed me, I’ve had death threats for speaking out
My name is Hibo Wardere, I’m a mother, activist and the founder of IKWRO, a charity that supports women and girls affected by FGM
I’m from Somalia and when I was 7 years old I was taken to Djibouti on a family holiday where I'm told I underwent female genital mutilation (FGM)
It was the most horrific experience of my life. I was held down by several women and a man cut me with a razor blade. I bled for days and was in agony. I was so young I didn’t really understand what had happened to me, but I knew it was wrong.
FGM is a barbaric practice that has no place in our society. It is a violation of human rights and a form of gender-based violence. I have had enough of the silence and shame surrounding this issue.
I decided to use my voice to raise awareness of FGM and support other women. I want everyone to know how harmful this practice is and must end.
I will not be silenced.
I have had death threats for speaking out about FGM, but I will not be deterred. I am stronger than ever and I will continue to fight for the rights of women and girls.
I hope that my story will inspire others to speak out against this harmful practice and if you have any information regarding FGM, please report it to the authorities.
Together, we can break the silence and end FGM.
