'I feel like James Bond' – Maylander on what it's like to drive the Aston Martin Safety Car at full throttle
Aston Martin Racing driver Bernd Maylander has spoken about what it's like to be behind the wheel of the Aston Martin Safety Car, admitting that it reminds him of driving a James Bond car.
Maylander has been driving the Safety Car since 2000, and is considered to be one of the most experienced and respected figures in the F1 paddock.
“I feel like James Bond when I’m driving the Safety Car,” Maylander said. “It’s a very special feeling, and it’s something that I’m very proud of.”
The Safety Car is responsible for leading the field around the track when there is an incident, and Maylander’s job is to ensure that the drivers stay safe and that the race can be restarted as quickly as possible.
“It’s a very responsible job, but it’s also a very rewarding one,” Maylander said. “I love being able to help the drivers and the marshals, and I’m always happy to do my part to make sure that the race is safe and fair.”
Maylander’s role as the Safety Car driver is not without its risks. In 2014, he was involved in a serious accident at the Japanese Grand Prix when he was hit by Adrian Sutil’s Sauber.
“That was a very scary moment,” Maylander said. “But I’m grateful that I was able to walk away from it uninjured.”
Despite the risks, Maylander says that he loves his job. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” he said. “It’s a dream come true to be able to drive a car like this, and to be a part of such a prestigious event.”
