Football | Bundesliga: Mainz Focused on the League - Concerns for Jenz and Amiri
Mainz 05 with a Focus on the Bundesliga
After their Round of 16 exit from the DFB Cup match against Bayern Munich, Mainz 05 is directing all their attention towards the Bundesliga. The club is sitting in 11th place in the league, with 24 points from 18 matches. They are only five points above the relegation playoff spot and seven adrift of a place in the top half.
Mainz sporting director Martin Schmidt is aware of the precarious situation and has urged the team to improve their performances in the league. He said, "We have to focus on the Bundesliga now. We have to pick up points and move up the table." To bolster their survival chances Schmidt is hoping to have a couple of long-term injury concerns back in the squad soon.
Jenz and Amiri inching closer to returns
Mainz will be boosted by the return of central defender Stefan Bell in the coming weeks. Bell has been out since September due to a foot injury but is now back in training and could feature in the squad for the next match.
There is more positive news on the injury front for Mainz, with both Marlon Mustapha and Delano Burgzorg making their comebacks from injury recently.
However, there are concerns for two key players. Defender Jeremiah St. Juste missed training due to an adductor issue, and midfielder Leandro Barreiro will be out for weeks with an ankle injury.
Mainz Missing Key Players
The absence of both players is a blow for Mainz. St. Juste has been a key player in the defense this season, while Barreiro has been one of the team's most creative players.
Schmidt will be hoping that both players can return to action soon, as Mainz looks to move up the Bundesliga table. The 05ers are back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Eintracht Frankfurt.
