FDP general secretary suggests imminent end of the traffic light coalition
Threshold increasingly exceeded
For months, the FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai has been critical of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) for their crisis management. In an interview with the “Tagesspiegel,” he now suggests that the coalition of the SPD, Greens and FDP could end soon. “The moment when we no longer see the point of continuing the coalition will come at some point,” the liberal politician said.
As reasons, he cited the increasing burden on citizens and companies due to rising energy and food prices, as well as the federal government’s failure to implement necessary reforms.
“Red lines increasingly being crossed”
Djir-Sarai warned that the FDP would not tolerate any further tax increases or restrictions on property rights. “We are increasingly seeing red lines being crossed,” he criticized. He also accused the Greens of blocking the construction of new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, which are urgently needed to become independent of Russian gas.
The FDP politician emphasized that his party was prepared to govern without the Greens if necessary. “We are not married to the Greens. We are ready for constellations in different sizes,” said Djir-Sarai. He did not rule out new elections if the coalition fails.
