Endeavour's Shaun Evans Was "Repelled" by Until I Kill You Serial Killer

Endeavour co-star Shaun Evans said meeting the serial killer Levi Bellfield during research for new ITV drama left him feeling “repelled and fascinated.”

Evans, who plays Detective Constable Morse in the prequel to Inspector Morse, interviewed Bellfield for the second series of Untill I Kill You, a new drama about the former nightclub bouncer’s crimes.

Bellfield is serving a whole-life term for murdering Marsha McDonnell, Amélie Delagrange and Milly Dowler, and the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy.

Evans visited Bellfield in prison to learn about the man who committed such evil acts, but was left disturbed by the experience.

Evans said: “What I found fascinating was that he didn’t look like a monster at all, and he was able to be polite, charming even.”

“I would go and visit him in prison and he would put his arm around me and say, ‘Son, you are doing a very good job’. At one time he even said, ‘If you wanted to hear any more, come up to my cell and we can talk more privately.’ That was quite shockingly repellent.”

Evans admits that he was also fascinated by Bellfield, due to his charming, but menacing presence.

Evans said: “The most repellent and fascinating thing was the sheer ordinariness of the man.

“I said to him, ‘Levi, there are 10 blokes out there that look like you, a million blokes out there that look like you’, and that’s the point, because if he looked monstrous, you would notice him, but he didn’t look monstrous at all. He was just a very ordinary man, and that’s the most frightening thing of all.”

Until I Kill You will be broadcast on ITV on Monday, August 21.
