Emery on disappointing EFL Cup loss: I am disappointed and frustrated
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery criticised his team's performance in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg
The Villans were beaten 3-1 at home by Manchester United in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.
After the match, Emery said: "I am disappointed and frustrated.
"We didn't play at our level, we didn't play with the intensity that we need to play in a semi-final."
"We gave Manchester United too much respect, we allowed them to play their game and we didn't create enough chances of our own.
"We need to be much better in the second leg if we want to have any chance of reaching the final."
Emery made four changes to the team that beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday, with Frederic Guilbert, Kortney Hause, Douglas Luiz and Leon Bailey coming into the side.
However, the changes did not have the desired effect, as Villa were second best to Manchester United throughout the game.
The visitors took the lead through Marcus Rashford in the first half, and Bruno Fernandes added two more after the break.
Ollie Watkins pulled a goal back for Villa late on, but it was a mere consolation.
Villa will now need to win the second leg at Old Trafford on January 24th to have any chance of reaching the final.
