Edu completes Arsenal exit as Arteta era begins

Brazilian departs to take up new role as sporting director at Palmeiras just months after leaving his post at Emirates Stadium

Edu has left his role as Arsenal’s technical director to become the new sporting director of Brazilian giants Palmeiras. The move brings an end to his two-and-a-half-year spell at the Emirates Stadium, where he worked closely with manager Mikel Arteta to oversee the club’s transfer strategy.

Edu, who made 127 appearances for Arsenal as a player, was appointed to his role in July 2019. He was part of the team that helped Arteta rebuild the Arsenal squad, with the club spending over £300 million on new signings during his tenure.

However, Arsenal have endured a difficult campaign in 2021-22, finishing eighth in the Premier League and failing to qualify for any European competition. Edu’s departure is seen as a sign that Arteta is taking more control of the club’s transfer policy.

Palmeiras are one of the most successful clubs in Brazil, having won the Copa Libertadores three times and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 11 times. Edu will be tasked with overseeing the club’s football operations, including player recruitment and development.

In a statement on the Arsenal website, Edu said: “I would like to thank Arsenal for the opportunity to work at this great club. I have learnt a lot during my time here and I wish the club all the best for the future.”

Arteta added: “I would like to thank Edu for his contribution to Arsenal. He has been a valuable member of my staff and I wish him all the best in his new role at Palmeiras.”
