Earthquake shakes northern Greek port city of Thessaloniki
4 injured as magnitude-5.3 quake hits Greece’s second-largest city
Minor damage reported, no casualties
A magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck the northern Greek port city of Thessaloniki on Thursday, injuring four people and causing minor damage to buildings, authorities said.
The quake hit at 9:55 a.m. local time (0655 GMT) and was centered about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of Thessaloniki, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the Institute of Geodynamics at the National Observatory of Athens.
The quake was felt across northern Greece and in neighboring Bulgaria. It caused minor damage to some buildings in Thessaloniki, including cracks in walls and broken windows, but no major structural damage was reported.
Four people were injured in the quake, one of whom was seriously injured. The injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and follow instructions from emergency responders.
“We are still assessing the situation and working to ensure the safety of our citizens,” said Mayor Konstantinos Zervas.
Thessaloniki is Greece’s second-largest city, with a population of about 1 million people. It is located on the Gulf of Thermaic, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) north of Athens.
