Diego Forlán Switches to Tennis, Partners with Fede Coria in Doubles
Former Independiente striker teams up with experienced Argentine player.
A new chapter in the sports career of Diego Forlán.
Former Manchester United and Atlético Madrid striker Diego Forlán has announced his retirement from football and is now playing doubles in tennis.
The Uruguayan international striker has teamed up with former world No. 5 Fede Coria on the professional circuit and the pair have already played in three tournaments together.
"I have always loved tennis and I am very excited to start this new chapter in my life," said Forlán. "I know it will be a challenge, but I am ready to work hard and see how far I can go."
Coria, who is 10 years younger than Forlán, is a highly experienced doubles player and has won several titles on the ATP Tour.
"I am very excited to be playing with Diego," said Coria. "He is a great athlete and I think we can have a lot of success together."
The pair made their debut at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Montevideo, Uruguay, where they reached the semi-finals.
They then played in the ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they lost in the first round.
Their most recent tournament was the ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where they reached the quarter-finals.
Forlán and Coria are now preparing for the upcoming clay-court season, which will see them compete in several ATP Challenger Tour events in Europe.
"Our goal is to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament," said Forlán. "We know it will be difficult, but we are working hard and we believe we can do it."
Forlán is one of Uruguay's most successful footballers, having won the Copa América in 2011 and the Golden Boot at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
He also played for several top clubs in Europe, including Manchester United, Atlético Madrid, and Inter Milan.
Now, at the age of 43, Forlán is embarking on a new chapter in his sporting career.
And with Coria as his partner, he has a good chance of success.
