Bernd Mayländer and Richard Darker extend partnership with Aston Martin

Maylander enters 27th year of service as F1's Safety Car Driver

Richard Darker appointed Deputy Safety Car Driver for 2023

Formula 1 has announced that Bernd Mayländer and Richard Darker will continue their roles as Safety Car Driver and Deputy Safety Car Driver, respectively, for the 2023 season.

Mayländer, who has held the position since 2000, will enter into his 27th year of service with the pinnacle of motorsport. The experienced German driver has played an integral role in ensuring the safety of drivers and marshals during race events.

Darker, who was appointed as Deputy Safety Car Driver in 2021, will continue to support Mayländer in his duties. The British driver is a former British GT Champion and brings valuable experience and expertise to the role.

Both Mayländer and Darker will drive the new Aston Martin Vantage Safety Car, which made its debut at the 2022 British Grand Prix. The Vantage Safety Car is a high-performance sports car that is equipped with the latest safety features and technology.

"I am delighted to continue my role as the Safety Car Driver for Formula 1," said Mayländer. "Safety is paramount in our sport, and I am committed to ensuring that all drivers and marshals are protected during race events. I am also looking forward to working with Richard again this season. He is an experienced and skilled driver, and I am confident that he will continue to provide valuable support to our team."

"I am grateful for the opportunity to continue my role as Deputy Safety Car Driver," added Darker. "I have learned a great deal from Bernd over the past two years, and I am eager to continue to grow and develop in this role. I am also excited to drive the new Aston Martin Vantage Safety Car, which is a fantastic car that is perfectly suited for this role."

The Safety Car plays an important role in Formula 1. It is deployed when conditions on the track are deemed to be unsafe for racing, such as in the event of an accident or heavy rain. The Safety Car leads the field around the track at a reduced speed, allowing the drivers to catch their breath and the marshals to clear any debris or hazards from the track.
