Bayern Munich win DFB-Pokal, complete domestic double
Bayern Munich have won the DFB-Pokal, completing the domestic double after winning the Bundesliga title earlier this season.
The Bavarians defeated Bayer 04 Leverkusen 4-2 in the final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Saturday. Robert Lewandowski scored twice for Bayern, with Kingsley Coman and Thomas Müller also getting on the scoresheet.
Lewandowski's goals were his 40th and 41st of the season in all competitions, making him the first player to score 40 goals in a single campaign for Bayern since Gerd Müller in 1972/73.
The victory was Bayern's 20th DFB-Pokal title, moving them one ahead of Schalke 04 in the all-time standings.
It was also a record-extending 13th domestic double for Bayern, who have now won both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in the same season more times than any other club in German history.
Bayer Leverkusen were valiant in defeat, but they were ultimately no match for a Bayern side that is now widely regarded as one of the best in the world.
The match was played in front of a crowd of 74,322, and the atmosphere was electric. Bayern fans were in full voice throughout, and they celebrated their team's victory with gusto.
The victory was a fitting end to a successful season for Bayern Munich. The Bavarians have now won six of the last seven Bundesliga titles, and they have also won the DFB-Pokal three times in that period.
Bayern will now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals. The Bavarians will be looking to win the Champions League for the first time since 2013, and they will be confident of their chances against Real Madrid.
