Arminia Bielefeld - After the surprising second place in the league table, now also into the semifinals of the DFB Cup
Bielefeld writes a football fairy tale
Arminia Bielefeld continues to amaze the Bundesliga and has now also reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. No one had expected that at the beginning of the season.
Arminia Bielefeld has reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. The Bundesliga soccer team from East Westphalia won 3-2 (1-1) at VfL Bochum on Tuesday evening after a turbulent game.
It was a bitter defeat for the second division team from Bochum, which had previously knocked out three Bundesliga clubs from the competition. In front of 5,450 spectators in the rewirpowerSTADION, Sebastian Vasiliadis gave the hosts an early lead in the 11th minute.
Bielefeld equalized thanks to Fabian Kunze (38th), but Gerrit Holtmann (50th) put Bochum back in front. Then things got wild: Bielefeld's Andres Andrade saw the red card for a rough foul (55th), but Kunze (70th) equalized again. In the 79th minute, Janni Serra scored the winning goal for the guests.
In the semi-finals, Bielefeld will now face either Bayern Munich or Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The match will take place on April 20th or 21st.
Bielefeld's success in the DFB Cup is a surprise for many. The club only narrowly avoided relegation from the Bundesliga last season. But under coach Frank Kramer, the team has developed extremely well this season and is currently in second place in the table. The DFB Cup success is now the icing on the cake of a successful season so far.
For Bochum, the defeat is a bitter disappointment. The club had hoped to reach the final for the first time since 1988. But Bielefeld deservedly won the game in the end and will now face one of the top teams in the Bundesliga in the semifinals.
The DFB Cup semi-finals will take place on April 20th or 21st. The final will be played in Berlin on May 21st.
