Johnston Pleads Guilty to Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building
Actor Jay Johnston was sentenced to one year in prison on Tuesday for his role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
Johnston pleaded guilty in October to a misdemeanor charge of parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.
He was arrested the day after the attack after he was seen on video entering the Capitol with a group of rioters.
Johnston's Role in the Capitol Attack
According to court documents, Johnston was part of a group of rioters who entered the Capitol through the Senate Wing door.
Once inside, Johnston joined a mob that pushed past police officers and entered the Senate chamber.
Johnston was seen on video standing in the Senate chamber and taking pictures of the rioters.
Johnston's Sentencing
Johnston was sentenced to one year in prison and one year of supervised release.
He was also ordered to pay a $2,000 fine.
In a statement, the US Attorney's Office said that Johnston's sentence was "appropriate" given his role in the Capitol attack.
Johnston's Apology
In a letter to the judge, Johnston apologized for his actions and said that he was "deeply sorry" for his role in the Capitol attack.
Johnston said that he was "swept up in the moment" and that he did not intend to harm anyone.
He also said that he has learned from his mistake and that he is committed to becoming a better citizen.
